U.S. Highway 63 Corridor Improvements

Waterloo, Iowa

Our firm was hired as part of a multidisciplinary team for this extensive multi-phased project designed to improve circulation within and through the city while revitalizing neighborhoods throughout this heavily traveled corridor. For some of the corridor, city right-of-way purchases created an opportunity for realignment of the roadway, thereby improving traffic safety and providing additional greenspace as a buffer for the highway. A design charrette process gathered input from corridor residents, neighborhood associations, business owners, and other stakeholders and served as a guide in the design of greenspace developments, lighting, furniture, bike path connections, specialty pavements, and artistic elements. New community gateway features and a park-like landscape theme were developed to enhance and restore character to neighborhoods that had been negatively impacted by past highway improvements.
