Cedar Falls, Iowa
RKLA was hired as part of a design team to completely reconstruct this prominent corridor entrance into Cedar Falls with a complete street concept, integrating roundabouts for traffic control, multiple modes of transportation, extensive landscaping, and monument signage features as part of the enhancements. Improvements needed to account for increased traffic to new housing development in the area and access to the future Cedar Falls High School, which will be completed in 2024, while continuing to serve the McLeod Center and UNI Dome event traffic. Three separate roundabouts will provide safe and efficient traffic flow at various intersections and will provide recognition of the City of Cedar Falls, the Cedar Falls Community School District, and the University of Northern Iowa with monument signage features. RKLA developed a 3D model of the corridor to illustrate the enhancements for the multiple jurisdictions to gain approvals for the design concept, and then designed and detailed the roundabout signage features, brick paving at the intersections, an extensive tree planting plan along the corridor, and plantings in the roundabouts that tie in with the overall planting palette being used throughout Cedar Falls.
