Grimes Farm

Marshalltown, Iowa

Marshall County Conservation Board was given a gift of the Grimes family farm on which to create a conservation learning center. Our office led the MCCB and the Grimes family into a successful venture by including them, along with the public, in an interactive master planning process. This plan focused on native vegetation restoration, management of the non-tillable acres, and creating inviting public facilities. A day spent in this “classroom” is coordinated by the public-school teachers assisted by guest instructors from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the Marshall County Conservation Board. Together they help the student understand their relationship to soil, air, water, sunlight, and all living things.
